The Lonely by Tara Brown

The Lonely - Tara Brown

When I picked up this book, I didn't have any idea what should I expect. I knew it was new adult, romance, with few steamy scenes like in all NA books and main heroine with serious problems. I usually troll around Goodreads looking trough my friends' updates and reviews which leads to very bad thing - I figure out everything about books I want to read or end up with such a high expectations that I always end up feeling disappointed because it's never good as I expect it to be. Thank you God, I didn't do that with The Lonely.

If you read my reviews, talked with me about my favorite books, than you know that I love, but seriously, love - twisted, dark, erotic stories with hints of capture-bonding and all other kink that goes with it. I could smell Stockholm syndrome after first ten pages. My inner perv was jumping all over the place and screaming: "Hell, yes! Finally! I am sick of all those lovey-dovey nonsense you've been feeding me lately."

Oh, thank you holy father Soren for all the dark and fucked up bastards! Now you are thinking what the hell am I talking about and how does Soren, our dearest kinky priest, fits in this story. Well, he doesn't, but that man put all the standard must-haves for sadistic main characters we love so much. Tara Brown gave us one of those in her book. His name is Eli and you are going to kiss the ground he walks on.

The story may confuse you, but keep reading. I was lost for a moment while I was reading The Lonely. Why? After that initial euphoria about captive motif, I started losing hope that anything would happen along that lines. I was so wrong. My advice - do not read reviews with lot of synopsis details (we all know too well that some reviewers may get too caught in fangirling mode and they just can't help themselves - I am barely holding my wits together, I'm dying to tell you all). Just take the book in your hands and start reading. You will be surprised to see where it will take you. Also, you just might want to be alone while reading some parts. Your flaming red face might tip you off in front of your mother, not a nice conversation to have - trust me.

Lost Boy. The companion novel to The Lonely, Lost Boy, was published in July this year. It is told from Eli's point of view and I heard that it is something that you should not miss. I am hyped to see what went trough his crazy head and I'll be reading it soon.

xoxo,

Wicked Heat - Nicola Marsh Review posted on Way Too Hot Books

For starters, I have a confession to make. I love Australia. I love it since the first time I watched Heartbreak High, I think I was eleven years old, and I experienced my first fangirling moment. And don't let me start with amazing authors such as Melina Marchetta, Cath Crowley and Lucy Christopher. Now you understand why I just had to read Wicked Heat. Oh, and this: Jett Alcott looks like Alex O'Loughlin.

Story & Characters. Nicola Marsh is one smart woman. Why? Because she uses the best advantage she has - being a woman means that you know woman's heart and her secret desires really, really well. If you are a writer and your genre of choice is romance, that is something that will help you a lot if you use it wisely. Wicked Heat has everything that makes a good mainstream romance novel:

1. lovable female character that will not annoy you and with who you can relate,
2. male character that will make you swoon and "ohh" and "ahh", strong, but not too dominant.

Main focus is on Allegra and Jett. It's all about their relationship, so it's understandable that very little part of the story deals with other characters. They are all in the background, which is good because Wicked Heat wouldn't be a good if it wasn't a case. I would say that this book is perfect choice for beach, but considering rain and low temperatures these last few days, it looks that summer is behind us. But don't let that stop you! If you are allergic on rain (*shivers*) like me, you need to read something that will keep you in your happy, sunny place.

But what I liked the most was way too hot part of this book. Of course.;) It is beautifully written without all of the sex-talk that you find in erotic romances - stupid lines is what I hate the most in this type of the books. And, man, Jett Alcott knows how to talk! In the bed and outside of it.

One tiny little bit detail that I find lacking is the ending - certain parts of it were rushed, but still, that wasn't something that will make me diss Wicked Heat.

What should you do? Nicola Marsh is writing second book of Feel the Heat series. Wanton Heat will be out sometime around beginning of 2014. which means that you have more than enough time to prepare yourself and meet Aussie hunk, Jett. Now, go, read! And tell me all about it!

Buried Secrets - Emme Rollins Review posted on Way Too Hot Books

Buried Secrets was one tough book to label. New adult, mystery/suspense, romance, paranormal...That last one I didn't expect and it's probably what bugged me the most.

Storyline. So, we meet Dusty, eighteen year old girl, on funeral of her twin brother Nick. She's inconsolable and can't get over the fact that her brother was killed. Who jumps in? Nick's best friend Shane. Of course. Dusty tries to find out what happened and soon enough find herself in the arms of town's infamous bad boy. Quite predictable story. If you stop here. Emme Rollins didn't stop. That was my main problem with this book. It's almost as if you have two separated stories mixed into one book - love story and mystery and they just don't work out together. Other thing which I didn't like was ending. Paranormal part was a deal breaker for me. Until that point I thought that I'll at least like Buried Secrets because of mystery, but that killed it for me.

Characters. Dusty has a potential to be a likeable character, so does Shane, but, again, it's like in the first half of the book author decided to write new adult novel and in the second adult novel. In the first half of the book they are acting like kids, but later they are too much like those characters from cheap romance novels where they are all using this big words in intimate conversation that you'd never use in real life. But it's not just the way they are talking, it's whole setting (note: pay attention to Shane's cabin in the woods). The most interesting character was actually Nick, Dusty's dead brother.

Final judgement. Buried Secrets is a novel with lot of potential but it still needed lot of work to be just right.

Earthbound - Aprilynne Pike Review from Ja čitam, a ti?

Ghost Whisper meets Wings meets Fringe

Did you read [b:Wings|5056084|Wings (Wings, #1)|Aprilynne Pike|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1327983077s/5056084.jpg|5122699] series by Aprilynne Pike? You did? Than you know exactly what to expect. This author is well known for creating beautiful, magical world that will make you feel like a kid who is discovering worlds of faery tales all over again.

Unlike her heroine from Wings series, Tavia is a little bit older - eighteen. I'm guessing that author tried to "escape" image that follows her writing - it seems that general impression among readers is that her books are more appropriate for younger readers. Partly, she managed to to that, but there is still this "feeling of innocence", for the lack of better words. That is not bad thing, quite opposed, it's one of the reasons why I love Aprilynne Pike novels.

Best way to describe Earthbound would be Ghost Whisperer meets Wings meets Fringe. Best from all three in one package. I have to admit that somewhere around middle of novel I had my doubts about plot and characters, but I'll give you one advice. Keep reading and everything will come to its place.

So, why did I give it 4 stars? Love story. I liked chemistry between Tavia and Benson - especially that scene in the library, but I still felt like something was missing. And that ending? I thought this supposed to be standalone novel. And now I have to wait to see what will happen next. And I so don't like Logan. Aprilynne, you better make thing right.:)

Should you read this book? If you like true young adult paranormal romance, as soon as you can!

Tears of Tess - Pepper Winters Review posted on Way Too Hot Books

I am sorry, but I just don't like it...

I have to admit that I wasn't sure about writing review for this book. I always feel bad when I don't have lot of good things to say about ARC I requested. But then again it is honesty that is appreciated, right? This will be short.

Tears of Tess first got my attention because of pretty cover. After reading book description, I was sold. Dark, hot, erotic - check. Taboo, twisted, Stockholmish - check. Yes, my inner perv was having a blast. Then my co-blogger Tanja over at Ja čitam, a ti? told me that I probably could get advanced copy of this book. I was over the moon. Few days later and there it was in my inbox. That's where everything went downhill. Why? Well, that would be a little longer list.

1. I love taboo themes. Stockholm syndrome is on the top of my perv-list. (I know - don't judge me.) You would think that Tears of Tess would be perfect for me. Wrong. I didn't find it believable at all.

2. Badly labeled. I understand that new adult is big hit now, but this book is not new adult. At least not by my standards. Tears of Tess is taboo erotica no matter how old main heroin is. I know authors like to use all kind of tricks to get attention, but please, don't label your books as something they are not.

3. Storyline. It started really interesting, but than it all... I don't know. Something happened and I just started to notice all cracks in the plot. It has interesting premise, but it's too much like faerie tales about princesses who have to save kingdom by marring monster-king who is actually good, but he just forgot all about it because of some curse.

4. Tess and Q. So many times I just wanted to slap both of them or to finally stop reading.

One thing that I liked - steamy scenes were interesting.

Maybe it is just me. Maybe I read it at the wrong moment. Maybe you will love this book. Or I have finally outgrown this type of literature. I don't know. If you are intrigued by dark erotica, you should read Tears of Tess. If you read Dark Duet series by S.J. Roberts and you think that Q is new Caleb, lover your expectations.

Anatomy of a Boyfriend - Daria Snadowsky Review from Ja čitam, a ti?

I have to say a big thank you to Daria Snadowsky for sending me her Anatomy novels. Second, I owe the biggest apology to Daria Snadowsky for not reading her books three years ago when I saw Anatomy of a Boyfriend on my Goodreads "wall".

First thing that got my attention was the cover. That plastic Kan doll that most of us used to play with. Along with Barbie, of course. And then there are all those pointers like "clueless", "ready to run" or "terra incognita". Title Anatomy of a Boyfriend? My two younger cousins came to visit few weeks ago and when they saw books on my table, they thought that they were some kind of "sex manuals" (their words, not mine). What would you think?

Well, it is kind of sex 101. This is the story about teenage girl who discovers her body and sexuality. A realistic version, not something like tons of young adult romance novels involving sex - recently labeled as new adult. I was curious to see what other people thought about it, so I checked reviews on Goodreads. As I assumed, fans of books like Beautiful Disaster, My Favorite Mistake and similar titles talking about first time experience, weren't impressed with Anatomy of a Boyfriend - they didn't like all real life moments, lack of alpha male character and ending. Others found all those things refreshing and they liked this book because of all those things. Smaller third group is somewhere in the middle, they like it, but it's too realistic for them and they would be happier if it ended differently. So, where do I go? I really liked this novel. This would be one of books I will get my daughter to read. When she gets to that point of her life. (Just to make one thing clear, I don't have kids jet, but I like to think about the things I'd like to teach them.)

I will be honest with you and admit that main character, Dominique, annoyed me. A lot. But after I finished reading and I started to think about it, I got to the conclusion that she is more like teenage girl than most of the fictional girls I've read about. Weird, awkward, clingy... And Wes acts pretty much like every boy I used to know I high school.

Should you read this book? If you want to read something different, if you are sick of pathetic love stories and instant deep connections, Anatomy of a Boyfriend is right choice for you.
